1. Unreal Engine

Unreal Engine by Epic Games is one of the best at creating a high-end triple-A 3D titles when it comes to performance and optimization. Although it’s certainly not a beginner software, it’s the engine you want to use if you want to build a triple-A game experience, but you can also try making B tier games, although there are other engines for that. Unreal supports an incredible range of functions right out of the box and is especially strong in high-quality visuals.  Unreal has a large developer community and a comprehensive plugin and content market to support the developers. 2. GameMaker

If you developed a 2D game in the past, you probably know about GameMaker Studio 2. GameMaker is an amazing tool owned and developed by Yo-Yo games,  GameMaker has been around for years and has built a great community, a quick YouTube search will give you a lot of tutorials, it also has a great drag and drop interface ideal for startups game developers with weak coding knowledge. When you get a hang of the game engine, you can use their libraries and scripting languages to do refine your games and give complicated commands.  GameMaker Studio 2 basic sells for $39 which is a pretty good deal if you ask me, a free trial is also available for its latest version.

3. Corona

Corona Labs developed its own game engine called Corona. Corona is a very good game engine to develop 2D mobile games. Corona uses a common language called Lua to make it easy to use and has a big community with many tutorials as well.  Corona has a unique and easy to use user interface, perfect for beginners who want to learn about game development. Corona has its own marketplace to purchase plugins, this is for supporting the developers behind Corona. Pricing is a highlight of Corona since Corona is totally free without charges or fees, but it does not sell licenses for its plugins. Zip Zap, Gunman Taco Truck, and HoPiKo are some of the titles developed using Corona.

4. Construct3

Construct3 developed by Scirra, Construct3 has a drag-and-drop GUI and a library of built-in behaviors for your in-game characters, such as animations and AI responses, is another easy-to-use 2D game engine compared to Corona. It’s great for game developers who lack deep programming capabilities because its simple drag-and-drop interface and has an active plug-in marketplace and it’s reasonably easy to get help from other developers in forums all over the internet, one cool feature of Construct3 is that you can directly deploy your games to a web browser for you and your friends to test out the game. Construct3 has a free trial with many limitations, and the base version is around $99, CoinOp Story, Airscape, and The Next Penelope are some of the most popular games developed using Construct3.
